International Experiences

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” -Mark Twain
One of our most unique aspects of our adventure education program is our offering of international experiences throughout the year. These small group trips provide our students with the opportunity to travel the world and practice generalizing skills they are working on at Daniels Academy in a novel, authentic environment. On these trips students engage in a variety of recreational, academic, therapeutic, and cultural activities to broaden their world view as well as create lifelong memories.
Each trip is designed to be enjoyable yet challenging and they are often the highlight of a student’s time at Daniels Academy. On these trips students are faced with various real world stresses that come from travel such as new customs, activities, group dynamics, and foods. These challenges require them to practice and develop flexible thinking, emotional regulation, social learning, and other executive functioning skills. To best support the students on these trips we maintain a 2:1 student to coach ratio for each international trip. Just as important as it is to challenge our students, we also seek to make these trips as fun as possible. It is important for our young men to have strong, positive experiences as they navigate and develop their sense of self.

Over the years we have traveled to countries all over the world including Italy, Thailand, Costa Rica, Peru, Cambodia, Mexico, and Japan. Every year we plan trips to new destinations based on our student’s suggestions and interests. In addition to our international travel, we also conduct domestic trips focused on educational and career exploration. These trips have taken us to cities such as San Francisco and Seattle to visit the likes of Stanford, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Boeing, and technical schools. We also keep these trips balanced by planning recreational, cultural, and therapeutic components to the trip such as exploring majestic Yosemite National Park to sailing off the coast of the Pacific Northwest.
